In Defense of Marriage and Other Beliefs

Gay marriage is not just not acceptable to most Americans. The voters have decided this matter in California (though the courts overruled it) and other states. The defense of traditional marriage is one of personal belief, in much the same way that defense of gay marriage is a matter of personal belief.  Right now a majority of Americans (by way of vote) have said they believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. This is not intolerance, it is simply opinion. Attacking those of us who do not agree with you and smearing them as racists and homophobes is completely and utterly unfair and ultimately futile (it does not make us want to understand it any more or less). It is simply a part of our belief system.

It could very well be that in 20 years the majority may think that it is fine. But at least it will be the will of the majority and be a law of the people and not the decision of the bench. Will that make me agree with the opinion? No. Will I respect the decision of my peers? Absolutely. What tends to get lost in the argument for both sides is that though I may disagree with you, I will defend your right to believe it.

Marriage is a sacrament to me...it is how I and others who share this view were raised. I was also raised to treat others with respect. As an American I was taught to believe that there should be equal treatment under the law. The law is decided on by the people by way of vote (referendum) or by way of their representatives. In either case, it is a majority vote that either makes a law or prevents it. I personally think income tax is a poor system and should be repealed. Right now by way of representation, this law does not have enough challangers to change that. So be it...the people's will is evident and I move on in the hopes that one day enough people will come to my way of thinking. If not, I will continue to work within the boundaries of the law. And I will celebrate democracy and forever defend the will of "We the People".
