Pelosi is apparently taking up Newt Gingrich's talking points - one by one.
First, she sends a letter to President Bush urging him to release some of the strategic reserve into the market. Now Congress is taking steps to vote on opening up more drilling in Alaska. All this while Mr. Obama is saying it won't matter if we drill now because we won't see drop one for seven years and even then it will be sold in the open market to India and China which won't make a difference in prices. Apparently because he has spent little time in Washington these days, and his friends there forgot to send him the memo, he has no idea that the political winds have shifted again and his party has started singing a slightly different tune.
Oh, the winds of change. They are a blowin'!
So, if it really doesn't matter, then why all the fuss to get all this rolling? Well, couple this with the poorest grade ever given to Congress along with increased unrest by the citizens of this country over oil prices, you have to think they are starting to actually get the message that Americans have been largely unimpressed with the big show they put on with Big Oil execs, and the utterly stupid and futile lawsuit against OPEC. They are looking for that big win in November folks. It is as simple as that. It will be interesting to see how long they will hold out this carrot.
Right now, Obama is looking like he is a bit out of step with his peers. And why is this? Because he is already taking way too much heat over the Iraq position flip and the 2nd Amendment position flop from his base that he cannot afford to move an inch on this subject. This puts him seemingly at odds with members of his own party. While Congress can get away with these token gestures (since as of this writing I am uncertain if they are really going to do anything) Obama cannot. So while Congress appears to be headed toward the will of the people, Obama, as usual, is looking the other way.
