Watching the unveiling of the memorial at the Pentagon this morning was a moving experience. The thought that hit home the most for me was that each of the memorials for each of the victims that day in Washington was that every one starts at a height of three inches. This represents the age of the youngest victim that day. Having two young ones at home, I felt my heart drop. I felt that loss as if it were my own flesh and blood.
This is important to remember. Our enemies, who plotted and executed this cowardly attack on 9/11, do not discriminate between young and old, or black and white. They want to kill us all. We need to remember that and we all need to start facing the fact that our enemies have a face...the face of Islamic extremists. They are not the little old lady standing in line at the airport. They are not the family of five going home to visit their grandparents.
We all look to the skyline of New York and say "Never again", but some of us appear to be adding the caveat "...as long as it doesn't interfere with their civil rights." Civil rights belong to those who choose to be civil. Just think, the men who took control of American Airlines flight 77 looked into the eyes of a three year old child and felt no remorse that day, and tell me that they are civil.
Ours is not to judge. God is the judge. We just need to arrange the meeting.
